“This is going to be their second season, after an experiment that has turned out incredibly well as the first all-queer theatre company in our city. Their opening production will be “Unsex’d,” by Jay Whitehead and Daniel Judes and co-presented by Lethbridge’s Theatre Outré. The story is a dark comedy set in the early 1600s and focuses on two boys who are vying for a role in Macbeth. It has already been a huge hit at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival as well as the Atlantic Fringe Festival. You can see it at Motel in the Epcor Centre Oct. 29 – Nov. 2.”
“Another we’re looking forward to is “Wag!” by One Yellow Rabbit’s wonderfully familiar Denise Clarke. In June, she actually won an honorary degree from the Arts department of the University of Calgary and, having been with the theatre company for many years, is now performing solo in a piece that she wrote. Described as a “terpsichorean” (of or relating to dancing) comedy, she will tell stories of loss and cheerful discovery. Music and dance will mark her level of creative achievement in the city as she lets loose in this dance of life.
Theatre Calgary will also be drawing audiences with some familiarity, in their rendition ofThe Great Gatsby. They have become known for confidently bringing novels to the stage and this tale is particularly tantalizing. It tells of a mysterious, wealthy man with a lavish, jazz-era lifestyle, who obsesses to once again be with his first love, despite the scandalous ripple effects it would cause. It will roar through the curtains Oct. 15 – Nov. 10.” – BY CAIT LEPLA
